We had our first snowfall at Abby’s Acres. To get ready for the cold winterized I the water system with a heat cable and insulation.
So far the water is staying liquid, and the chickens are drinking to their hearts content.
The chickens hated the snow, but luckily it melted giving me a chance to expand their snow free area by building an “igloo.”
It is plastic sheet held by up conduit quick hoops kindly lent by Seeley Farm. The chickens loved eating worms while I buried the sides. Hopefully they will enjoy having a good sized run under the snow.
Abby’s Acres was founded in 2015 at the Tilian Farm Development Center in Ann Arbor Township.
Our mission is to produce the highest quality eggs by treating our chickens as well as we treat our family pet, Abby.
To provide for our chickens we created a Robotic Chicken coop controlled by an Arduino microcontroller that opens, closes, feeds, and waters the chickens automatically based on sunrise and sunset. To ensure great foraging we move the coop once a week around our 5 acre pasture. Eggs are collected with roll out nest boxes to keep them clean and unbroken.
In the coming months we will be sharing more about our chickens, coop, and of course Abby. Please enjoy our eggs and come back soon.
